On Wednesday, 18 October, Mamelodi Sundowns bowed out of the Carling
Knockout after losing to TS Galaxy on penalties. The match ended 2-2, with
Galaxy winning 5-4 on penalties. The match took place at the Mbombela
Stadium.
Sundowns were without seven key players who travelled with Bafana Bafana
to Ivory Coast, leaving the team with only four players from the MTN8
final. Galaxy made the most of this advantage, scoring two goals in the
first half. Sphiwe Mahlangu scored the first goal on the 11th minute, with
Mlungisi Mbunjana doubling the lead three minutes later.
Sundowns remained patient on the ball, and eventually pulled a goal back
four minutes before the hour-mark. However, they were reduced to ten men
two minutes later after Bongani Zungu was sent off for a leg-breaking
challenge on Bernard Parker. The Tshwane giants continued to push for the
equaliser, and it eventually came in stoppage time through Gaston Sirino.
Sundowns looked more likely to score in extra-time, but the game
eventually went to penalties. Galaxy held their nerve, and won 5-4 on
penalties after goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari saved Lesiba Nku’s spot-kick in
sudden death.
