On Monday, the trial for the two men accused of the murder of former Kaizer Chiefs star Lucky Maselesele, also known as ‘Romza’, began in the Johannesburg High Court. Maselesele was 41 when he was killed in Alexandra in October 2021, allegedly stoned to death by a group of people who accused him of stealing power cables.
At the time of his death, the South African police had apprehended two men in connection with the crime, although it was reported that more people were involved.
Phindi Mjondondwane, a representative from the National Prosecution Authority, confirmed that the trial had begun but could not provide further details on the accused.
Maselesele played for Kaizer Chiefs between 1998 and 2004, and had also featured for Maritzburg United, Thanda Royal Zulu, Black Leopards, FC AK and Civics FC in Namibia.
The former forward was fondly remembered by many in the South African football community, and his death was met with shock and sadness.
