Arthur Zwane, in his first ever stint as a head coach, recently passed the halfway mark of the season in charge of Kaizer Chiefs. Soccer Laduma took a look at how he has fared compared to his predecessors at this point.

2021/22 – 1.13

Zwane’s official record shows that he has overseen 19 games in charge of Amakhosi (including cup competitions), and it is ‘10111’s league performance that is under the microscope. In the DStv Premiership, the 49-year-old has amassed a win rate of 47%, having won seven of his first 15 matches in charge. Meanwhile, 20% of Zwane’s matches have ended in stalemates, with three draws so far in the campaign. Zwane’s five defeats has left him with a 33% loss rate.
As things stand, Zwane is Chiefs’ joint-best coach at the halfway mark of the season, with only Ernst Middendorp having registered a better win rate. He has an identical record to Stuart Baxter in his second spell.
Impressively for Zwane is the fact that he has a better win rate than a number of ex-Chiefs coaches, such as Gavin Hunt (27%), Giovani Solinas (33%) and Steve Komphela (40%).
What is noticeable about Zwane’s tenure is his side’s ‘all or nothing’ mentality. Zwane’s Chiefs have picked up the joint-most wins at this point of a season, but equally have lost the joint highest number of games.
Chiefs’ brightest spell so far has been their three-match winning run that saw them gain wins over SuperSport United, Swallows and Stellenbosch respectively.
Zwane, who had predicted a tough start to the second round of the 2022/23 campaign, kick started the second round with a 4-0 thrashing at the hands of AmaZulu – Chiefs’ joint worst ever defeat.
“The second round won’t be easy. There will be teams that want to avoid relegation, teams who want to be in the top eight and teams that are vying to win the league,” he told the club’s website.
There will be a bit of respite for the Glamour Boys who have a couple of days rest before their next match against Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday at the FNB Stadium.
