Kaizer Chiefs have added a new striker to their ranks with the signing of Congolese forward Christian Saile Basomboli from Zambian side Nchanga Rangers. The addition of the new man could give head coach Arthur Zwane the opportunity to tweak his starting line-up and create a dynamic attacking force.
Burundian striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana has been leading the scoring charts for Amakhosi with seven goals in the DStv Premiership and has been heavily relied on for goals upfront. He has scored over a third of Amakhosi’s goals in the league this season, but could have tough competition in Basomboli.
Both Bimenyimana and Basomboli are big strikers who can provide goals, but the challenge for Zwane could be playing them at the same time. As a start, Zwane could have Basomboli coming off the bench to make an impact in the second half, with Chiefs often needing someone who can come on and make a difference when things are not going so well. Basomboli could be that man to make a difference for Chiefs in the second half when the chips are down, but the Congolese striker will definitely be fighting to get into the starting line-up on a regular basis.
Former Amakhosi striker Shaun Permall spoke to the Siya crew and said, “I am all for the target man type of striker, but I don’t see them playing together. I don’t see it working, unless he (Basomboli) is a back-up. But I don’t see them going into the market to get a back-up.”
If Zwane were to play with the two strikers upfront, it could change how his midfield looks, with the traditional two in midfield and wingers. Keagan Dolly and Kgaogelo Sekgota are the type of players who are able to play on the wings and whip in crosses for the target men.
Chiefs have also signed Thatayaone Ditlhokwe from SuperSport United on a pre-contract and he will give Edmilson Dove competition in the left-sided centre back position.
Kaizer Chiefs have the potential to create a dynamic attacking force with the addition of Basomboli, and it will be interesting to see how Zwane utilises this new signing to get the best out of his team.
